We have a special fondness for people who stay true to themselves in spite of what’s trendy in the world around them. That’s why we got such a kick out of this story.
Taelor Beeck was waiting on tables at a burger and shake place in Des Moines, Iowa. After serving a table, she was shocked at what they had written on their receipt on the line for a tip. The customers wrote, “Tips are only for normal looking people.”
“At first I was upset. I felt attacked,” Taelor said. Not that it matters, but what is so abnormal about Taelor? She has a nose ring, pink hair, and tattoos, nothing that your average college student hasn’t contemplated doing. And she has a super sweet personality. “I may look like a weirdo, but I’m actually a very nice, decent person!” Taelor said.
Here’s the thing: this customer was in a restaurant called Zombie Burger! This wacky joint has menu items like “Undead Elvis” and “The Walking Ched.” There are statues of zombies next to the tables just waiting to eat customers’ brains, for crying out loud! And this person is shocked – shocked! — by pink hair and a few tattoos?
Servers count on tips to make the rent, so stiffing Taelor on the tip makes it hard for her to pay her bills. We think this criticism of her quirky appearance is small-minded and unfair. Luckily, the restaurant’s owners agree. They said, “”We believe that Zombie Burger is a place that celebrates individuality… She is an example of a great team member and we are standing by her.” Good for them.
Let your freak flag fly, Taelor! You keep on being you, and we’ll keep laughing at the real freaks who judge people on superficial appearances. Next time we’re in Des Moines, we’ll be sure to come grab a Zombie Burger and leave a generous tip.
