In today’s rapidly changing health care environment, it is increasingly important for individuals to be informed of their rights and options when it comes to health insurance. One of the most important questions to ask is: can I purchase health insurance now? Buying health insurance is not only an important preventive measure to protect your health, but can also provide financial security and peace of mind.

The short answer is: yes, you can purchase health insurance now! The Affordable Care Act, or ACA, offers individuals and families the opportunity to enroll in health insurance plans all year round.

Individuals and families who are interested in buying health insurance can use the Federally Facilitated Marketplace, or FFM, to compare and purchase plans. Through the FFM, you can view information about different health care plans and compare the features, costs, and coverage options side by side. After you find the plan that works best for you and your family, you can then purchase health insurance and have it effective in as little as 24 hours.

Individuals and families who are currently uninsured may be able to receive assistance from the government to help cover the costs of their health insurance. During open enrollment (November 1 – December 15), individuals and families may be eligible for subsidies, tax credits, and cost sharing assistance to help lower the cost of their monthly premiums and out-of-pocket health care costs. Eligibility for these subsidies is based on the individual’s or family’s income and household size.

Even if you missed the open enrollment period, you may still be able to purchase health insurance. Certain situations like losing existing health coverage, getting married or divorced, having a child, or moving to a new state will trigger special enrollment periods and allow individuals and families to purchase health insurance outside of the open enrollment period.

Purchasing health insurance is an important step to protect both your health and financial stability. By taking advantage of the opportunities available, you can make sure that you and your family get the coverage you need.
