Are dreads and locs different, or are they just different terms used to describe the same hairstyle? Though both dreadlocks and locs are two of the most popular traditional hairstyles for African Americans, there are distinct differences between them.

Dreads, or dreadlocks, are created when a person let’s their kinky or curly hair air dry and the natural oils and grime causes the strands of hair to link or ‘lock’ together. In order to keep them in place and maintain them, comfort holds are sometimes created by twisting and locking small sections of hair.

Locs, or ‘dread locs’ are a more unified, uniform versions of dreadlocks, and require special attention and maintenance. They’re created by taking sections of hair and twisting them together, and then using wax, product, or string to hold them in place.

Though both styles are equally beautiful, there are also key differences between the two. One of the most notable differences between dreads and locs is the amount of time it takes to create them. Most natural dreads (no wax used) take several months, if not longer, to lock, due to the drying and matting process whereas locs can take only a few weeks to a month to achieve. As you can imagine, this makes them much easier to maintain for people who don’t have the patience or time to tend to their traditional dreads.

Locs and dreads are also different in terms of texture. Dreads can often have a rougher and thicker texture, whereas locs are soft and silky. As some people prefer the more rugged texture of dreads, others find comfort in the improved manageability of locs.

Finally, locs and dreads also differ in terms of styling options. With dreads, styling can often be limited due to the texture, although locs tend to be easier to style as the texture is more malleable.

Despite the differences between them, both styles offer plenty of positive benefits. Whether it’s convenience, comfort, or style, both dreads and locs are wonderful options for people of all ethnicities who are looking to break away from typical modern hairstyles and embrace their individuality and culture.
